A cancer diagnosis can affect the emotional health of patients, families, and caregivers. Common feelings during this life-changing experience include anxiety, distress, isolation, loss of self-esteem, and depression. Roles at home, school, and work can be affected. It’s important to recognize these changes and get help when needed. Cancer affects your body, but it affects your emotions and feelings, too.
One in three people with cancer will experience a mental health problem such as depression or anxiety disorders before, during or after treatment. A cancer diagnosis, its associated symptoms, and treatment can have a significant emotional impact on people and their families, with fear, and loss of independence having an impact.
